I like still lifes that don't just represent some carefully arranged objects, but also tell a small story. Hopefully, Still Life with a Mirror has one of such stories to tell. In my perception, it's about a woman who's getting ready for an evening, planning to go out with her beloved. And if she happens to be your woman, it's a great feeling when you catch her glance in the mirror, as she smiles at you, as if saying: "Aha, you like what you see, don't you?"

Although it is always a pleasure to view a well constructed traditional concept still life, this is something far more interesting and unusual. The choice of objects immediately convey the idea of a story within the composition and allow the viewer to feel more connected to the scene rather than a voyer on the outside.

The composition cleverly leads the eye around the painting via each object. Immediately the reflection of the face peering through the mirror takes the vewer's attention, followed by the ring and along the diagonal of the lipstick and lid, up the ridged angle poise lamp stand to the wonderful, soft glow of the lamp and then back down to the mirror and face again. It is a very satisfying feeling following the shape of the objects around the composition and really connects the drawing as a whole.

Most satisfying of all though, is the delicious way the artist has captured and communicated such a diverse range of textures. From the detailed patterns and subtle wave of the curtains in the background, to the wood grain detail on the table, to the realistic portrayal of reflections on the metal mirror edge. Everything has been so carefully shaded and finished without the drawing becoming too constrained or 'stiff'. I could honestly stare at this for hours.
